Experienced teaching

Andy Thomson, our principal, has been sailing most of his life. He and his wife currently own an Oyster Heritage 37 based in Salcombe Harbour. They have enjoyed several seasons sailing on the west coast of Scotland and have sailed right around the Shetlands. Andy is an RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Instructor and has been teaching afloat and ashore since 1996. Before starting the Devon School of Navigation he ran a correspondence school for RYA shorebased courses and a practical sail training school in the Solent. He teaches all our courses himself. Andy no longer teaches afloat and has specialised in teaching the RYA navigation related shorebased courses (Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean) together with VHF (SRC) and Radar. Andy was Station Manager for the National Coastwatch Institution lookout at Prawle Point for seven years until November 2019. He lectures and teaches for Kingsbridge Estuary Boat Club and was a member of the Salcombe Harbour Board from 2012 to 2018.
