Experienced teaching

Andy Thomson, our principal, has been sailing most of his life. He and his wife have sailed the English Channel, voyaged to Spain and Scotland including the Shetlands. They’ve owned several yachts with the last one being an Oyster Heritage 37. He is an RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Instructor and has been teaching afloat and ashore since 1996. Before starting the Devon School of Navigation he ran a correspondence school for RYA shorebased courses and a practical sail training school in the Solent. He teaches all our courses himself. Andy no longer teaches afloat and now specialises in teaching the RYA navigation related shorebased courses (Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean) together with VHF (SRC) and Radar. Andy was Station Manager for the National Coastwatch Institution lookout at Prawle Point for seven years. He lectures and teaches for Kingsbridge Estuary Boat Club and was a member of the Salcombe Harbour Board for six years.
